What is a Leo like?
What somebody born under each sign and each birth star is held to be like — including the part most descriptions leave out. Every one of these names a cost as well as a gift, because a description that only flatters reads the same for all twelve, and you would notice.
This is what the tradition says about a sign, not a prediction about a person. Anybody is more than their birth month.

Read as direct, quick to decide and happier acting than deliberating — the sign the tradition puts first because it is the one that begins. Courage here is ordinary rather than heroic: saying the thing, making the call, going first when nobody else will. The cost arrives in the same motion. A Mesha person is not naturally good at waiting, and a great deal of what a life asks for is waiting; the characteristic difficulty is not anger but impatience, and the habit of treating a delay as an obstacle to be pushed through rather than a fact to be worked with.
With other people — Straightforward to deal with and hard to mislead, because they say what they think while they are still thinking it. What they find difficult is the slow negotiation — being asked to hold a position for weeks while other people catch up.

Steady, sensual and unhurried. Vrishabha is read as the sign of what is held rather than started: money, comfort, the things around a person, and a settled preference for quality over novelty. There is real patience here, of a kind that outlasts more dramatic effort. What it costs is movement — a Vrishabha person can stay with an arrangement, a job or a habit long past the point where it stopped being right, and will call that loyalty. The tradition's word for the difficulty is not stubbornness exactly; it is that changing is genuinely more expensive for them than for other people.
With other people — Warm, physically affectionate and extremely reliable, and slow to let anybody in. Once somebody is in, they tend to stay in for decades, which is a gift and occasionally a trap.

Quick, verbal and interested in everything, which the tradition reads as the pleasure of two things at once. A Mithuna person picks things up fast, explains them well, and is usually the one in a group who knows a bit about whatever came up. The cost is depth: the same quickness that makes learning easy makes finishing hard, and the classical caution is that a dual sign can spend a life being good at many things and expert in none. Restlessness is felt as boredom, and boredom arrives sooner here than elsewhere.
With other people — Excellent company and easy to talk to about anything. Harder to pin down for the conversation that is not interesting — the one where somebody needs them to sit still and be serious for an hour.

Read as the sign of memory and of shelter, ruled by the Moon and correspondingly changeable. A Karkata person feels first and reasons afterwards, remembers what was said to them years ago, and puts a great deal of themselves into making somewhere safe — a home, a family, a team. The protectiveness is genuine. What it costs is proportion: the same sensitivity that notices what everybody needs also takes a passing remark harder than it was meant, and the tradition's honest note is that a Karkata can withdraw for reasons nobody else was told about.
With other people — Looks after people, often before being asked, and is difficult to look after in return. Tends to carry a slight and long — not out of spite, but because they remember exactly how it felt.

Ruled by the Sun and read as the sign of dignity and visible will. A Simha person is generous, warm, hard to overlook, and genuinely capable of leading — the tradition's image is the one who takes responsibility in public rather than the one who merely wants attention. Both exist in the sign. The cost is that it matters to them how they are seen, more than they usually admit, and a Simha who feels slighted takes longer to come back from it than the slight deserved. Pride here is not vanity; it is that their sense of themselves is public, and public things can be damaged.
With other people — Loyal, openhanded and very good to have on your side. Difficult when they have to be one of the group rather than the one the group turns to, which is a thing most lives eventually require.

Discerning, practical and quietly exacting — Kanya is read as the sign of the work of making something correct. Notices the detail everybody else walked past, and is usually the reason a thing actually works. There is a strong service instinct here, often unshowy. The cost is the same faculty pointed inward: a Kanya person is frequently the harshest critic of their own work, and the tradition is specific that the difficulty is not perfectionism about the world so much as an inability to call their own effort finished.
With other people — Shows care by doing things rather than saying them, which is easy to miss. The difficulty comes when they correct somebody who did not want correcting — accurate, helpful, and not what was being asked for.

Libra · Tula · Thulam

Movable air · ruled by Venus
Read as the sign of balance and agreement: a Tula person sees both sides genuinely, not diplomatically, and is unusually good at the room. Fairness matters to them as a principle rather than a pose. The cost is decision. Holding two sides in view is what makes them fair and also what makes choosing painful, and the classical caution is that a Tula can defer a choice so long that it gets made by circumstances. There is also a quieter difficulty: the wish for things to be pleasant can postpone a necessary disagreement past the point where it was small.
With other people — Charming and genuinely interested in other people. The difficulty is that they accommodate further than is good for them, and then resent it quietly rather than say so. Partnership suits them; being alone suits them less than they say it does.

Reserved, intense and not much interested in the surface of anything. Vrischika is read as the sign of what is not shown, and a Vrischika person tends to know considerably more about the people around them than those people know about them. There is formidable staying power here — they do not let go of a thing, a person or a question. The cost is in the same grip: the tradition names suspicion as the characteristic difficulty, and the harder half is that a Vrischika who has decided to withdraw their trust rarely explains it, which leaves the other person with nothing to answer.
With other people — Slow to trust and, once they do, more committed than almost anybody. Being close to one means accepting that some rooms stay closed, and testing whether they are closed is the reliable way to lose the rest.

Broad, optimistic and hard to keep in one place — Dhanu is read as the reach beyond what is already known, whether that is travel, belief or study. A Dhanu person is usually the one who says the thing out loud that everybody was avoiding, with no malice and not much calculation. The honesty is real. The cost is tact and follow-through in about equal measure: the sign is generous with enthusiasm and less generous with the unglamorous middle of a project, and the classical note is that a Dhanu can promise at a scale that a Dhanu will not personally deliver.
With other people — Excellent company, hopeless at pretending. Will tell you the truth you did not ask for and be genuinely puzzled that it landed badly.

Patient, structured and playing a longer game than the people around them realise. Makara is read as the sign of accumulation: not fast, not showy, and remarkably difficult to stop. A Makara person takes responsibility early, often earlier than was fair, and tends to be the one holding something together. The cost is that the same seriousness is hard to put down. The tradition is direct that this is the sign most likely to mistake usefulness for worth, and to keep proving itself long after the proving was necessary.
With other people — Dependable to a degree that other people plan around, and not naturally demonstrative. Affection is shown as turning up, which reads as coldness to anybody expecting it to be said.

Read as the sign of systems and collectives, and of a certain distance from the immediate. A Kumbha person thinks in structures rather than instances, holds unusual positions without much need for company in them, and is often the one who noticed the problem years before it became obvious. Principle matters to them. The cost is the distance itself: the same detachment that makes them fair makes them slow to notice what is happening emotionally right in front of them, and the classical caution is that a Kumbha can be devoted to people in general and difficult with a person in particular.
With other people — Loyal in an unsentimental way and genuinely tolerant of oddity, which is rarer than it sounds. Harder to reach when somebody needs feeling rather than analysis.

Imaginative, permeable and unusually able to feel what somebody else is feeling — Meena is read as the sign where boundaries dissolve. A Meena person is kind in a way that costs them something, often creative, and rarely as fragile as they appear. The cost is exactly the permeability: the tradition's caution is about escape rather than weakness — the pull towards whatever makes the edges softer, and a difficulty saying no that other people learn to rely on. Where a Meena is unhappy it is very often because they have absorbed a situation rather than addressed it.
With other people — Forgiving, intuitive and easy to be vulnerable around. The difficulty is the boundary: they will give more than they have and then disappear rather than say so.

The twenty-seven birth stars
A finer division than a sign — about thirteen degrees against thirty — which is why the tradition describes them more particularly. Kerala names them in Malayalam; North Indian practice uses the Sanskrit. Both are given.

People born under it tend to move first and ask afterwards, and to recover from setbacks faster than seems reasonable. The first Nakshatra, spanning the head of Aries. Its deity is the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin physicians, and the tradition reads it as swift, restorative and fond of a fresh start.

Presided over by Agni, and read as clarifying — the star that separates what is true from what is not. Sharp perception, plain speech, and very little patience for pretence. The cost is in the same edge: Karthika says the clarifying thing more bluntly than the moment needed, and is often right in a way that is hard to be on the receiving end of.
